Chapter

Twelve

As Desmond led Sadie toward his Packard, he found himself worrying about the number of unsavory characters that seemed to be lurking about in the gathering dark. Instinctively he reached back and grabbed Sadie’s hand. It was something he would have done with his daughter when she was younger.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Sadie asked, before jerking her hand back.

“Sorry, protective side of me,” Desmond responded.

“I told you I don’t need protecting.”

Desmond wanted to snap back with something witty, but his nerves were getting the better of him and truth be told, he just wanted to reach his Packard and get to Archibald’s place. As they neared the alleyway where he’d left his car a dark figure jumped in front of them, his face hidden by a hood. Desmond caught the glint of something in the moonlight and realized the person was wielding a knife.

“MMMMmmmmhhhhmmmm! What’s a fox like that doing with a sewer rat like you?” The man’s words dripped with venom.

“I don’t know, but he’s quite handsome, isn’t he?” Sadie interrupted, and her response made Desmond laugh.

“I don’t think he was talking…”

“Shut your trap fox.” The man brandished the knife at her, and Desmond stepped between the two.

“You want to put that away before you hurt someone?”

“Like……. You maybe?” The man came after Desmond, raising his arm above his head, and bringing it down swiftly. Desmond braced for impact, pissed that was the way he was going out, and his daughter’s murder would go unsolved.

A sound like a whip cut through the air followed by a loud crack. The man groaned loudly, and Desmond heard the whip again.

“Get the hell out of here,” Sadie said. It took Desmond a few seconds, but soon realized at that moment he had thought he was going to be stabbed to death, Sadie had whipped the knife from the man’s hand slicing his cheek in the process.

The man, who was only slightly larger than Desmond, let out a squawk of fear and took off at a full run.

“Well, that was fun,” she laughed and punched Desmond’s shoulder. “Hurry up… I told you it’s not safe around here.” Desmond was speechless, so rather than argue, he kept walking, and sure enough, as they reached the alleyway, the front end of his Packard came into view.

“There it is!” He nearly jumped up and down he was so giddy. He ran and reached in to set the choke and throttle, hurried to the front and twirled the crank. As the engine caught and roared to life, he jumped onto the seat and adjusted the choke till it ran smoothly.

“Well, this is nice, have you had it long,” Sadie asked as she jumped in the passenger side, her elegant tentacles draped smoothly over the front of the seat.

“Only about a year. I realize it’s not an Oracle, and you’re probably terribly uncomfortable. These things just weren’t built for your kind.” He frowned as he put the car in gear and drove off in the direction of Archibald’s Apothecary and Drug Co.
